Player Spotlight – Knowshon Moreno

When Knowshon Moreno was picked 12th by the Denver Broncos in the 2009 NFL draft, the team was drafting their featured running back for the next decade.  Moreno has what it takes to be a star in the NFL. He is a multi-purpose back that has the speed and strength to elude would-be tacklers and impede blitzing linebackers from getting to the quarterback with his exceptional blocking skills.  Moreno’s sophomore season at the University of Georgia was evidence of what potential this kid has in the NFL.  He had 1792 yards of total offense (1,400 rushing on 250 carries and 392 yards on 33 receptions) and scored 18 touchdowns (16 rushing and 2 receiving).

While the college game doesn’t always transfer over to the pro game, Moreno will be one of those running backs who will supersede expectations and have a great NFL career starting with his rookie season.   If Kyle Orton can manage the game and limit detrimental mistakes and Brandon Marshall stays happy and keeps on producing at a Pro Bowl level, it will open the door for Moreno to shine.  The team will start Moreno slow out of the gate while Lamont Jordan and Correll Buckhalter get a majority of the carries. His productivity will slowly climb as the season begins and by the midway point of the season, he will get the bulk of the carries.

Moreno is my choice for rookie of the year in 2009. As with most rookies, Moreno will be a sleeper in fantasy drafts and owners should take him in by the 6th round at the latest.  Keep a close eye on his increasing productivity as the season progresses and when he becomes the featured back in Denver, start him.

Projected Stats:
Rushing:  230 carries, 950 yards, 7 TD’s; receiving: 27 receptions, 279 yards, 1 TD
