Mike Williams is now a member of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers after being selected with the 101st pick (4th round) in the 2010 NFL draft.
While Williams was selected in the 4th round, he is widely regarded as a 1st round talent, but character concerns at Syracuse caused his stock to plummet rapidly. If he stays within the parameters of league rules, it is highly probable that Williams could emerge as the best receiver in the 2010 draft.
Williams is one of the greatest athletes to wear a Syracuse uniform in the past 15 years because of his dynamic red zone skill, speed and intangibles. Williams caught 49 balls for 746 yards averaging 15.3 yards per catch scoring six touchdowns.
Williams’ pro day caught the attention of Tampa Bay scouts as he ran a 4.49 in the 40 yard dash and bench pressed 225 pounds 19 times.
Williams’ remarkable showing at pro day has transferred into OTA’s impressing management, coaches and teammates alike.
“This kid is extremely competitive,” Buccaneers General Manager Mark Dominik said. “You are going to see a very excitable, very competitive football player. This is a kid that when you watch the highlight reels, that when the quarterback throws an interception he actually makes two tackles on interceptions. That shows you how competitive a guy he is. He loves it. He loves football. We’re very confident about that.” (PewterReport.com)
Williams is expected to compete for a starting job along with Sammie Stroughter, Reggie Brown, Michael Clayton and 2010 2nd round draft pick Arrelious Benn. Fantasy owners must keep a close eye on Williams progression through OTA’s and training camp because the chances of him earning a starting job are very favorable due to the lack of receiving talent that currently fill the depth chart.
Mike Williams is currently ranked 12th in our rookie wide receiver rankings.
