Fantasy Sleepers in 2010: QB Jason Campbell

Posted on 08. Jul, 2010 by Brandon LaClair in Columns, Draft Strategy

Jason Campbell has gone from a bad situation in Washington to the boundless debacle that is the Oakland Raiders.  While team success appears unlikely once again, the probability of Campbell posting quality fantasy statistics is encouraging.  Here’s why:

  • Since 2006, Campbell’s numbers have enhanced every season in the following categories: completions (327), completion percentage (64.5), attempts per game (31.7), total yards (3,618), average yards per attempt (7.1), passing yards per game (226.1), touchdowns (20), touchdown percentage (3.9), throws for 20+ yards (40), throws for 40+ yards (8), quarterback rating (86.4). (all statistics from 2009)
  • Raider receivers have a putrid stigma attached to them due to the futile play by JaMarcus Russell.  In reality, the receivers currently on Oakland’s depth chart are young, fast and talented.  All of their talent and potential have been essentially voided due to the inability of the incompetent Raider front office to place a quality quarterback under center since Rich Gannon.  In 2009, Raider quarterbacks were 31st in PPG (12.3), 31st in total yards (266.1) and 29th in pass yards (159.8).  With Campbell, Oakland receivers will have consistent play at quarterback and their statistics will increase dramatically from 2009.
  • The Oakland defense gave up 361.8 total yards per game (26th in NFL), total points allowed (379, 10th worst in NFL), total PPG allowed (23.7, 10th worst in NFL) in 2009.  In order for the team to stay in games in 2010, Campbell will have to adjust to traditional Al Davis football and throw the deep ball consistently, which means more fantasy points for you, Campbell’s owner.
  • Campbell has had multiple offensive coordinators over his short five year career in Washington.  Hue Jackson is the new offensive coordinator and a welcomed addition after helping lead the Ravens to 13th in total yards from scrimmage and two consecutive playoff appearances and ditching the disgraceful stigma that has been attached to their offense before Joe Flacco arrived.

According to Fantasy Football Calculator, Campbell’s ADP (average draft position) is 25th overall on the quarterback list.

With Campbell, Oakland will be lucky to win seven games in 2010, but he may be a diamond in the rough for your franchise.  I’m not saying that you should go out of your way to draft Campbell, but if you want a backup with upside, take Campbell between the 9th and 11th round of your draft.  My prediction is that he will throw for 3,700 yards, 23 touchdowns and 14 interceptions.

Sound like a productive fantasy quarterback? The answer is yes.
