Instant Impact – Rookie Redraft Rankings

Cleveland Browns Rookie Mini Camp

Finding instant impact rookies is vital to winning any fantasy football league.

Our redraft rookie rankings highlight the players who can make the biggest difference in 2010 in your redraft/keeper leagues and even your dynasty team.

Notable absent from this list is Buccaneers wide receiver Arrelious Benn.  I do not see him making an impact this season and could struggle with a poor offense and a young quarterback.  He does not have game-breaking speed and may only have marginal value in PPR leagues.

Rolando McClain and Sean Weatherspoon are good bets to finish in the top-30 IDP linebackers as rookies.

Sam Bradford is the only rookie that could start Week 1, and he should only be considered in the deepest of fantasy football leagues.

Read the player profiles included for more analysis.

  1. Dez Bryant, WR – Cowboys
  2. Jahvid Best, RB – Lions
  3. Ryan Mathews, RB – Chargers
  4. C.J. Spiller, RB – Bills

  6. Rolando McClain, LB – Raiders
  7. Ben Tate, RB – Texans

FEXFL Rookie Draft – Round 1

St. Louis Rams training camp

The first round of the Fantasy Experts Football League initial dynasty rookie draft is in the books.

The rookie draft began May 3, 2010 after the veteran portion of the draft was held from February to March earlier this year.  This expert’s league has many esteemed representatives from some great fantasy football sites on the Internet.

Below, you will find the first round results to help you begin to estimate what the ADP (Average Draft Position) of each player will be in your rookie draft.

This dynasty league has 16 teams, PPR, heavy IDP scoring, return yardage, and flex starters on offense and defense.

The following teams did not have a first round selection due to prior trades earlier in the draft: FantasyFootball.com, Fantasy Football Search, and Fantasy Pros 911.

1.01 Hatty Waiver Wire Guru – Mathews, Ryan SDC RB

1.02 The Fantasy Exchange – Bryant, Dez DAL WR

1.03 Fantasy Football Whiz – Best, Jahvid DET RB

1.04 RookieBlitz.com – Spiller, C.J. BUF RB

1.05 Fantasy Sharks Radio – Tate, Ben HOU RB

1.06 Bruno Boys – Bradford, Sam STL QB

1.07 RookieBlitz.com – Thomas, Demaryius DEN WR

1.08 Fantasy Football Brothers – McClain, Rolando OAK LB

1.09 RapidDraft.com – Hardesty, Montario CLE RB

1.10 Razzball – Tate, Golden SEA WR

1.11 RotoWire – Clausen, Jimmy CAR QB

1.12 1420 Sports – Berry, Eric KCC S

1.13 Fantasy Sports Group – McCluster, Dexter KCC WR

1.14 Fantasy Sharks Radio – Benn, Arrelious TBB WR

1.15 The IDP Guru – Gerhart, Toby MIN RB

1.16 RotoWire – McKnight, Joe NYJ RB

There was no surprise with the first four picks of the rookie draft.  The consensus top-four at this point is Mathews, Bryant, Best and Spiller in no particular order.  I had hoped Jahvid Best would fall to fourth, but I was happy to take Spiller (4th in my top 100).

Quarterbacks are at a premium in this 16-team league, so it was not a surprise to see Bradford go 6th or Clausen 11th.  Ben Tate has been a hot name lately with his great situation in Houston.

I was also happy to draft Demaryius Thomas at No. 7.  I just recently have moved him to 5th overall in my top-100 rookie rankings.

One of the only big surprises was that none of the top tight ends found their way into the first 16 selections.  Jermaine Gresham and Rob Gronkowski are great values at this point.

Arrelious Benn is the polarizing wide receiver from this group.  I recently moved him up four spots in my top 100 to 22nd overall, but there are some rookie experts that have him in their top-five overall regardless of position.

Stay tuned as we will breakdown all 96 selections of the 2010 FEXFL Rookie Draft.

Top 100 Rookie Dynasty Rankings 3.0

What do Wes Welker, Tony Romo, Priest Holmes, Antonio Gates and Kurt Warner all have in common?

They all went undrafted in the NFL Draft.

Flash forward to 2010 and the NFL has just wrapped up arguably the deepest draft class in years.

Lonyae Miller, Jeremy Williams, Blair White and Jarrett Brown could become the next undrafted college prospects to make a name for themselves in the NFL.

In our 3rd Update to our Top 100 Dynasty Rookie Rankings, we have included several undrafted players that find themselves with opportunities to succeed early in their careers.  Also, we have upgraded and downgraded several players after taking a closer look at their current situations.

Each player’s prior ranking will be listed in parenthesis.

2010 NFL Draft Round 1

Stock Up

Demaryius Thomas – Thomas will forever be linked with Dez Bryant and Brandon Marshall, the player he will replace in Denver.  Thomas suffered from a broken foot that limited our analysis of him this offseason; however, this young man has the chance to be special.  Thomas’ measurable are off the charts to go with his high character and football intelligence.  The Broncos may have made the correct selection on draft day.

Arrelious Benn – It is hard to evaluate Benn because of his lack of college production, but his situation warrants an upgrade in our rankings as the top wide receiver on the Buccaneers.  Benn moves up one spot on our wide receiver rankings from No. 8 to No. 7.

Daryl Washington – Washington will likely start next to Gerald Hayes as a rookie and should have solid IDP production as a rookie.  Washington could match the production of Rolando McClain as an early third round rookie selection.

Jimmy Graham – Graham has tons of potential and only needs to refine his football skills to become a difference maker in the NFL.  The Saints may have their in-house replacement for Jeremy Shockey in a few years.

Donald Butler – Butler was one of our favorite players leading up to the draft and he could not have landed in a better situation than in San Diego.  Butler will compete with veteran Kevin Burnett for the starting inside linebacker position next to Stephen Cooper as a rookie.  Butler is a dark-horse as a top-30 dynasty linebacker going forward.

Stock Down

Jimmy Clausen – Clausen was the top quarterback in our last rankings update, but it does not appear he will start immediately as a rookie.  Matt Moore will be given every opportunity to retain the starting job in training camp.  Clausen still has strong dynasty value in the second round or later of your rookie draft.

Anthony Dixon – Dixon is a big bruising tailback that will fit in well with the new smash-mouth philosophy of San Francisco 49ers.  Dixon could have some value in 2010, but he will be stuck behind Frank Gore and Glen Coffee on the depth chart.  Dixon will struggle to become anything more than a role player in the NFL with his limited skill set.

Sergio Kindle – Kindle fell in the draft because of injury concerns and not a lack of talent.  Kindle fits well into the Baltimore defense that can never have too many pass rushers.  Kindle may not see the field enough in 2010 to be worth anything more than a third round rookie selection.

Charles Scott –“Chuck the Truck” joins the Eagles backfield to help ease the load of LeSean McCoy and Leonard Weaver.  Scott is limited physically and may never be higher than third on the depth chart at running back for the Eagles.

Tony Pike – There were some that questioned Pike’s desire to play football and it likely lead to him falling until the 6th round.  Pike is stuck behind Jimmy Clausen in the short-term, and he is unlikely to pass him on the depth chart with a questionable work ethic for the game of football.

Our dynasty rankings are based on the following:

  • Deep IDP/PPR Leagues
  • Start 3 WR and/or Flex Player
  • Scarcity of starting QB’s and RB’s
  • Defensive Tackles are devalued and start at DL

Rolando McClain to the Raiders

NFL: Oakland Raiders Mini Camp

Rolando McClain is now a member of the Oakland Raiders after being selected 8th overall (1st Round) in the 2010 NFL Draft.

The Raiders selected McClain to upgrade their defense after many experts thought they would address the offensive line with their first selection.  McClain was an unlikely selection after the Raiders had missed on workout warriors JaMarcus Russell, Darren McFadden and Darrius Heyward-Bey in recent drafts.  McClain might be the safest player in the entire draft.

McClain inherited the starting middle linebacker position as a rookie when the Raiders traded Kirk Morrison to the Jacksonville Jaguars for a 4th round selection on day three of the draft.

What McClain lacks in top-end speed, he makes up for it in intangibles on the football field with his leadership and instincts.  McClain asked for his playbook immediately after he got the call from the Raiders so he could begin preparations for team mini-camps.

Rolando McClain has the talent and opportunity to turn in a top-15 season IDP season as a rookie linebacker.  He should have no problem replacing Kirk Morrison from day one and his fellow starting linebackers are more effective as pass rushers (Kamerion Wimbley and Trevor Scott).

McClain deserves consideration in the mid to late first round of your rookie draft and could be a safer selection than some of the skill position players available at that point.

Andre Roberts to the Cardinals

2010 NFL Combine - Day Two

Andre Roberts is now a member of the Arizona Cardinals after being selected 88th overall (3rd Round) in the 2010 NFL Draft.

The Cardinals drafted Roberts to help replace the departed Anquan Boldin (Ravens) at wide receiver and to help Steve Breaston in the return game.

Andre Roberts could be limited to the slot early in his career; however, he has an excellent opportunity to contribute immediately.  Roberts does not have ideal size for a starting wide receiver, but he has everything else required of the position.  He handles press coverage well, runs pro style routes and catches the ball in traffic.

Roberts was the entire offense for the Citadel Bulldogs and he dominated the Southern Conference with 36 touchdowns in 36 career starts.  For his career he totaled 286 receptions, 3,743 receiving yards and 36 touchdowns.

Unlike most small school prospects, Roberts did not appear out of place at the Senior Bowl and the NFL Scouting Combine.

Steve Breaston and Early Doucet will get the first chance to replace the production of Boldin in 2010, but do not discount Andre Roberts in your dynasty rookie drafts.  He has the talent to eventually develop into a starting wide receiver in the NFL with his game-breaking ability.
